What is History?
That is a good question. History is commonly known as something that has happened in the past or an event that has already happen...even if it was already five seconds ago. But let's dig deeper than that. History is the analysis and interpretation of past events (mostly created by the action of humans or nature such as earthquakes) that enables us historians to study how it can effect our present and future.
The word "history" originated from the Greek word "historia", which means "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation". History is also the discovery, organization, presentation, and a series of collection of things about the past. Basically, history is the story about us and our past! There are so many ways to define it!
History can be fun!
History isn't just about memorizing past events and dates. It's about understanding the cause and effect of historical events and interpreting it. While this can seem a bit overwhelming at first, history can actually be very fun for you. Remember, history is also about the story of our past. It's very fitting that the word "history" contains the word "story" in it. We all enjoy good stories, and history is full of them. Some of them may be very entertaining for you. For example, did you know that King Henry VIII of England was married 6 times? Did you also know that President Teddy Roosevelt had an uncle who was on the Confederate side during the American Civil War? History can be a lot more exciting than you might think.
Why study history?
There is a saying: "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it." History is studied in order for us to understand our past and our present so that we can have a better future. Many historians interpret histories in different ways and with many different views, mankind can work towards many possible roads to the future. By studying history, we can learn to interpret and understand why society developed as it was then and how it affects us now. When we learn history, we learn how the past can influence ourselves and our society and ways of life. Because of history, we are more prepared to live better lives in the present and the faults of the past can better challenge us for our future because it provides us with many opportunities to understand our world and what we can do to make it better.
